Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 5, 2019 10:06 AM
From: Senator John P. Sabatina, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution: April 2019 as Autism Acceptance Month & April 2nd, 2019 as World Autism Awareness Day in PA

Soon, I will introduce a resolution designating April 2019 as “Autism Acceptance Month" and April 2nd, 2019 as “World Autism Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex, lifelong developmental disability resulting in impairment of an individual’s ability to learn, develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand verbal, nonverbal and reciprocal communication. In fact, approximately 1 in 59 American children are living with Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention[1].

This resolution intends to highlight the greater need for recognition, understanding and acceptance to ensure that all individuals living with ASD are accurately diagnosed and appropriately supported throughout their lives.

Throughout the month of April, my office will be promoting information, resources and services for autistic people and their families in Pennsylvania. Included will be resources provided by the Bureau of Autism Services, housed under the PA Department of Human Services.

Additionally, on April 2nd the Lt. Governor’s Balcony will be lit blue in honor of “World Autism Awareness Day”.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to promote awareness and acceptance for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.
