Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 6, 2019 10:32 AM
From: Senator Steven J. Santarsiero
To: All Senate members
Subject: Radar for Local Law Enforcement

Pennsylvania is the only state in the country that doesn’t allow municipal police from using radar devices. With over 300 speed-related deaths per year, equipping local law enforcement with reliable speed-enforcement technology would allow nearly 1,200 police departments across the Commonwealth to more effectively slow down drivers and save lives.

Given these statistics, I plan to introduce legislation to permit radar usage by trained officers in counties of the first, second, second A and third class. Additionally, local municipalities would have to:
  • Adopt a local ordinance permitting such devices; as well as
  • Erect signs 500 feet outside the boundary of the political subdivision that notifies motorists of radar usage within the municipality.

For the last 58 years, Pennsylvania has reserved radar technology for state troopers. Please join me in supporting this legislation to ensure local law enforcement has the same access to the most reliable speed-timing devices in use today.
