Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 16, 2019 09:28 AM
From: Senator Michele Brooks
To: All Senate members
Subject: Displaying the POW-MIA Flag at Service Plazas, Rest Stops and Welcome Centers

In the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation to require all service plazas along the Pennsylvania Turnpike to fly a POW/MIA flag, along with the Commonwealth and U.S. flags. Welcome centers and rest stops would also fly this special flag of remembrance.

This legislation was introduced during the 2017-2018 session as Senate Bill 625, which was cosponsored by Senators Langerholc, Rafferty, Greenleaf, White, Brewster, Costa, Killion, Tartaglione, Folmer, Ward, Scarnati, McGarrigle, Argall, Yaw, Reschenthaler, Hutchinson, Regan, Aument, Mensch and Browne. This bill passed the Senate 50 to 0 in October 2017 but did not advance from the House State Government Committee.

Millions of travelers frequent our rest stops throughout the year. The addition of the POW/MIA flag at these service plazas, rest areas and welcome centers serves as a lasting tribute to those brave soldiers still missing in action and the families who have lost their loved ones.

The Flag of the National League of Families of American Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia, commonly known as the POW/MIA flag, symbolizes America’s missing service members and our unwavering determination to account for them. The flag has a black background, with white lettering reading “You Are Not Forgotten.”

Other than the United States flag, the POW/MIA flag is the only flag to ever fly over the White House.

Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation to remember and honor the heroes who have never been found and the families who miss them.

Introduced as SB395
