Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 6, 2018 01:56 PM
From: Senator Randy Vulakovich
To: All Senate members
Subject: Flag Day - June 14th

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 14th as “Flag Day” in Pennsylvania.

Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14th. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which occurred on that day in 1777 by Resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Describing the new flag, the Congress wrote, “White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.” Over time, the flag’s design evolved to keep pace with our Nation’s development and growth, but its meaning as a symbol of democracy and freedom has remained constant. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established Flag Day by proclamation. Flag Day became a national observance by Act of Congress in 1949 and was signed into law by President Harry Truman. On August 3, 1949, to commemorate the adoption of the American flag, Congress designated June 14th of each year as “Flag Day.”

On June 14, 2017, Americans will observe the 241st birthday of the United States flag. Please join me in recognizing Flag Day, which allows the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to reflect on the flag’s rich history and its meaning to Americans and people around the world.

In 2017, SR 144 was sponsored by Senators Vulakovich, Argall, Aument, Baker, Bartolotta, Brewster, Browne, Costa, Dinniman, Farnese, Folmer, Fontana, Gordner, Greenleaf, Hughes, Killion, Martin, Mensch, Rafferty, Reschenthaler, Scavello, Street, Tartaglione, Ward, White, and Yudichak.

Introduced as SR392
