| Subject: | Funding the Safe Schools Initiative |
In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation amending the Public School Code that will provide recurring revenue for the Safe Schools Initiative. Since 2013, the Office for Safe Schools coordinates school safety and security programs, collection of annual school violence statistics, coordination of antiviolence efforts, and development of policies and strategies to combat school violence. The office supports and provides technical assistance and professional development programs in the following areas and security-related activities to support school safety: crisis intervention, school police training, violence prevention, and social/emotional wellness and safety provides services to all local school entities. The Safe Schools Initiative was appropriated 8.5 million in fiscal year 17/18 for targeted grants. Under current statute, fees are established which are paid upon the filing of civil actions and legal proceedings as well as upon the filing of a deed, mortgage or property transfer. Additionally under current statute, fees are charged in criminal, summary and traffic matters. My proposal will direct these funds to invest in the safety and security of our schools. I anticipate that this proposal will generate over $50 million dollars for the Safe Schools Initiative and will be distributed via the Basic Education Funding Formula on a recurring basis.
