Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 11, 2017 09:52 AM
From: Senator Scott Martin and Sen. Ryan P. Aument
To: All Senate members
Subject: National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Pennsylvania

In the near future, we plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of September 24, 2017 through September 30, 2017 as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in Pennsylvania.

For 2017, September 24 – 30 is designated as “Adult Education and Family Literacy Week” to raise awareness about the importance and value of literacy for our individual and collective well-being.

Possessing adequate literacy skills has a direct impact on a family through child development, the ability to market oneself and retain a job with family-sustaining income and the pursuit of further education and training.

According to data reported in early 2017 from the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education, approximately 9 percent of Pennsylvania adults over the age of 25 do not have a high school credential. These individuals are more susceptible to unemployment, poverty and have a 50 percent increased risk of hospitalization.

Attracting companies and investors to our communities requires an adequate supply of skilled workers. Improving the literacy of our citizens has a direct impact not only on the individual and their family, but on our communities, our economy and our competitiveness.

I hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this resolution and help to bring awareness to the value of adult and family literacy.
