MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 22, 2017 03:08 PM
From: Senator Michele Brooks
To: All Senate members
Subject: POW/MIA Flag at Rest Areas

In the near future, I will be introducing a piece of legislation that would require all rest areas and welcome centers in the Commonwealth to fly a POW/MIA flag with the State and U.S. flags that they already fly.

There are currently 14 welcome centers and 64 rest areas throughout the state that millions of people frequent throughout the year. The addition of the POW/MIA flag at these rest areas and welcome centers serves as a tribute to those brave soldiers still missing in action and the families who have lost their loved ones and have never forgotten their sacrifice. The Flag of the National League of Families of American Prisoners of War and Missing in Southeast Asia, commonly known as the POW/MIA flag, symbolizes America’s missing service members and our unwavering determination to account for them and is symbolic to our state and Nation.

Other than the United States flag, the POW/MIA flag is the only flag to ever fly over the White house and in 1990 Congress designated the flag as “the symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing, and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation.”

Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation to remember and honor our heroes who have never been found and honoring those families who have lost their loved ones.

Introduced as SB625
