Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 2, 2017 11:37 AM
From: Senator Robert M. Tomlinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Keystone Exams

Please join me in cosponsoring legislation to allow schools to locally determine the role Keystone Exams will play in measuring student progress.

Last session, the General Assembly delayed requiring passage of the Keystone Exams as a high school graduation requirement until the 2018-2019 school year.

While this delay is helpful, it does not address the lack of local control over the tests. We certainly want student excellence and competency in Algebra I, Literature and Biology, but three tests should not be the determining factor in a student’s overall academic success. Schools should have the ability to determine how these tests best fit into a student’s academic career.

This legislation was co-sponsored last session by Senators Folmer, Dinniman, Teplitz, Haywood, Tartaglione, Greenleaf, Brooks, Alloway, Hutchinson and Vulakovich as Senate Bill 665.

Introduced as SB565
