MEMORANDUM

From: Senator John P. Sabatina, Jr.
To: All Senate members
Subject: April is Autism Awareness Month Resolution

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating April 2016 as “Autism Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. Autism is a severely incapacitating, lifelong developmental disability resulting in significant impairment of an individual’s ability to learn, develop healthy interactive behaviors and understand verbal, nonverbal and reciprocal communication.

A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC suggests that 1 in 45 children, ages 3 through 17, have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This is notably higher than the official government estimate of 1 in 68 American children with autism. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability, affecting more than two million individuals nationwide.

According to the National Autism Association:
  • Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3
  • Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities
  • Individuals with autism often suffer from numerous co-morbid medical conditions which may include: allergies, asthma, epilepsy, digestive disorders, persistent viral infections, feeding disorders, sensory integration dysfunction, sleeping disorders, and more.
Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to raise awareness for persons on the Autism spectrum.
