MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 22, 2016 04:27 PM
From: Senator Lisa Baker
To: All Senate members
Subject: Critical Access Hospital Supplemental Appropriation

Please join me in cosponsoring legislation to restore funding to the 13 critical access hospitals in the Commonwealth.

The Medical Assistance-Critical Access Hospitals line-item under the Department of Human Services in the amount of $5.676 million was one of several the Governor vetoed.

A critical access hospital is a federal designation meant to improve rural health care access and reduce hospital closures. An eligible facility must be a hospital located in a rural area that participates in the Medicare program, be located more than 35 miles from another hospital, and have an average daily census of no greater than 25.

The 13 facilities and their locations are as follows:

Barnes Kasson Hospital Susquehanna
Brookville Hospital Brookville
Bucktail Medical Center Renovo
Charles Cole Memorial Hospital Coudersport
Corry Memorial Hospital Corry
Endless Mountain Health System Montrose
Fulton County Medical Center McConnellsburg
Jersey Shore Hospital Jersey Shore
Meyersdale Medical Center Meyersdale
Mid Valley Hospital Peckville
Muncy Valley Hospital Muncy
Troy Community Hospital Troy
Tyrone Hospital Tyrone

This loss of funding has put these hospitals, their employees, and their communities in precarious circumstances. Barnes Kasson, located in my district, has already found it necessary to reduce salaries and lay off employees.

I appreciate your support for this legislation. Thank you
