| Subject: | Evidence Based Decision Making in State Government |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission (JSGC) to study the current use of evidence based decision making in state government. Evidence based decision making uses the best available research and information on program results to guide decisions at all stages of the policy process. By using evidence in budget and policy decisions, governments can: reduce wasteful spending; expand innovative programs; and strengthen accountability. Support is growing across the country for using evidence to shape government decisions and guide implementation of programs. The proposed JSGC study will help us better understand the return on investment of taxpayer dollars into state programs, as well as the types and amount of data currently collected and the extent to which data is shared between state agencies. There are many governments at the state and local levels that are currently facing long-term fiscal challenges. As a result, the demand by policymakers for better information on the outcomes that programs deliver for constituents continues to increase. This study will provide a useful understanding of the data that is currently being collected within state government and the degree to which it is being utilized to shape important policy decisions.
