Subject: | 50th Anniversary of Social Security Amendments of 1965 (Creating Medicare and Medicaid Programs) |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the enactment of the Social Security Amendments of 1965 which created the Medicare and Medicaid programs. On July, 30, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law this bill creating two of the most prominent healthcare programs in the United States. Medicare was established to provide healthcare for elderly individuals over the age of 65, and Medicaid was established to provide coverage for individuals living in poverty. Throughout the years, both programs have been enhanced to provide broader coverage in terms of services and individuals served. Throughout our country there are almost 60 million people enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. As such, these programs play a vital role in today’s healthcare system and positively affect the well-being and care of our society. I invite you to join me in introducing a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security amendments of 1965. |
