| Subject: | Active Schooter Drill Procedure in Schools |
| In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that would provide for an active shooter drill plan to be adopted and implemented by Pennsylvania’s schools. Educating our children is a top priority for all of us. Providing a safe and comfortable environment for our children to learn and be taught in is critical to the achievement of this goal. Today in Pennsylvania, schools are required to perform fire drills on a monthly basis and to have an emergency evacuation plan in place in the event of severe weather or natural disasters. This legislation would add active shooter drills to this list of required plans and would permit schools to replace two mandated fire drills with an active shooter drill. This legislation would require the Department of Education, in cooperation with the Office of Safe Schools and the State Police, to establish a best practice plan for an active shooter situation. These drills would be incentivized by making performing them a requirement to receiving a safe school grant from the state. The measures in this legislation help our schools be more prepared for an active shooter situation and help to make our schools a safer and more comfortable place to learn and grow.
