Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 25, 2015 08:45 AM
From: Senator Scott E. Hutchinson
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution Establishing a Forestry Task Force

In the near future, I plan on introducing a concurrent resolution to reinstate a legislative Forestry Task Force which will be under the administration of the Joint Legislative Air and Water Pollution Control and Conservation Committee, which I chair.

In Pennsylvania today, there are more 17,000,000 acres of hardwood forest and 25,000 miles of streams, making up almost 60 percent of the Commonwealth. The forests of Pennsylvania are also home to a multi-billion dollar forest-products industry that employs more than 60,000 people. A resource that provides so much to the state and its citizens must be protected.

The Forestry Task Force will be a bicameral and bipartisan committee that will investigate and look to improve the current state of Pennsylvania’s forests and provide long-term forest management strategies. The task force will consider topics such as invasive species, local government interaction, reinvigorating the timber harvesting industry, and developing a state forest management plan.

Adoption of this resolution will help preserve, manage and protect the state’s forests and game lands through the advisement of the General Assembly, so that future generations are able to enjoy Pennsylvania’s state forests.

I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.

If you have any questions regarding this resolution, please contact Nathan Akers in my office at 787-9684 or nakers@pasen.gov.
