Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 3, 2015 12:14 PM
From: Senator Lisa Baker
To: All Senate members
Subject: Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Awareness Week

As we commemorate American Heart Month, I will soon be introducing a related resolution to recognize AED Awareness Week in Pennsylvania, from February 22-28, 2015.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, with more than 350,000 people suffering from its grip each year. A sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, at any time, to anyone, at any age. When it strikes, time is of the essence. An AED (automated external defibrillator) is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy-to-operate tool for someone with no medical background.

The average response time for a first responder to arrive on scene after 9-1-1 is called is 8 to 12 minutes. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced by approximately 10 percent. Knowing where AEDs are located and how to use them are critical to survival.

I hope you will join me in promoting the purchase, placement and use of AEDs. Thank you for your consideration.
