Subject: | Latin motto |
I am reintroducing Senate Bill 868, recognizing “Ubi libertas vivit, hic patria mihi” as the official Latin motto of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The motto is the Latin translation of the quote “Where liberty is, there is my country,” which has been attributed to the Pennsylvania statesman Benjamin Franklin. The Latin motto will complement the current Pennsylvania motto “Virtue, Liberty and Independence.” The themes of the current motto will be reflected in the proposed Latin motto. The idea for a Latin motto was suggested to me by a high school Latin student from my district. In addition to reflecting the values of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the motto will promote the study of Classical languages, such as Latin, in our state. |
