MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 10, 2014 11:34 AM
From: Senator Jay Costa
To: All Senate members
Subject: Federal Civil Service Retirees - Property Tax & Rent Rebate Eligibility

Please join me in co-sponsoring legislation introduced as Senate Bill 387 in the 2013-2014 legislative session. The bill was co-sponsored by Senators Greenleaf, Yudichak, Erickson, Fontana, Solobay, Brewster, Vulakovich, Rafferty, Washington, Blake, Tartaglione, Farnese, Schwank, Hughes, and Boscola.

The bill will add those individuals who collect Federal Civil Service retirement benefits to the list of individuals who can deduct 50% of their income for the purpose of determining eligibility for the property tax and rent rebate program.

It was brought to my attention by a constituent that like railroad employees, Federal Civil Service retirees are not eligible for Social Security. A provision for railroad retirees to deduct 50% of income is already provided for in the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2006. My legislation would place Civil Service retirees in the same category.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this important legislation.

Introduced as SB503
