| I am reintroducing Senate Bill 264, amending the Vehicle Code, Title 75 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, to specify what steps the driver of an emergency vehicle should take when the emergency vehicle is involved in an accident. The new provision allows an emergency vehicle driver to leave the scene of an accident to respond to the initial emergency or to continue to transport a victim of the initial emergency. When responding to an emergency call, the driver of an emergency vehicle (fire or police department vehicle, ambulance, rescue or emergency medical services vehicle) may leave the scene of an accident in which the emergency vehicle is involved, if the driver believes it is reasonable and appropriate to do so and if the driver’s responsibilities at the accident scene can be fulfilled by another person acting on the driver’s behalf or by the driver’s radio communication with the police, fire, rescue or similar agency which will respond to the accident. Leaving a scene of an accident without complying with the requirements of this provision is a third degree misdemeanor. This legislation passed the Senate during a prior session. |
