Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 5, 2014 04:38 PM
From: Senator Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: Reducing the Legislature

I shortly will re- introduce SB 336, a constitutional amendment to reduce the General Assembly by more than a third, to 40 Senators and 121 Representatives.
Our present legislative structure was designed in the mid-19th century, when constituencies were sharply divided by our diverse and challenging physical terrain with slow and limited transportation means, loosely connected local economies, and communication beyond hollering range that was limited to horse mail. None of these conditions exist today, so this outdated framework needlessly costs millions of tax dollars a year.

Co-sponsors in the last session included Senators Vogel, Teplitz, Brewster, Yudichak, Smith, Vulakovich, Baker and Boscola.

Introduced as SB675
