MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 2, 2014 04:37 PM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz
To: All Senate members
Subject: Legislation – Disclosure of Political Contributions by Appointees

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation regarding the political contributions, in-kind donations, or political expenditures of an appointee that has been nominated to a cabinet office, board, commission or any other position that requires the confirmation of the Senate.

This legislation would require the Governor to report these contributions, donations, or expenditures to the President pro tempore, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader of the Senate within 10 days of the nomination. This bill is modeled after a similar bill in Missouri.

Nobody should be disqualified from public service simply by virtue of having previously exercised their right to be involved in the political process. However, an organized and routine disclosure of this information which is already publicly available to those who choose to search it out, would lead to greater transparency in government.

I would appreciate your co-sponsorship of this legislation.

Introduced as SB189
