| I plan to introduce legislation amending the firearms law to include recreational centers, parks and playgrounds as prohibited areas one may carry a firearm, and increase the penalty from a first-degree misdemeanor to a third degree felony. In two separate incidents in the month of September 2012, teenagers were murdered on public playgrounds in Philadelphia. In one case, the eighteen year old victim was gunned down only a few feet away from where children were playing. The institutions we envisioned for our children to be safe havens have been twisted into war zones. One of the ways we can take back our institutions and show our children such havens do exist is by showing zero tolerance to those who would intentionally and callously bring such weapons of destruction into their midst.
