Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 9, 2014 04:52 PM
From: Senator Judith L. Schwank
To: All Senate members
Subject: National Recovery Month

September 2014 marks the 25th annual observance of "National Recovery Month" in recognition of the need to promote the benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders.
The most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that one in 25 Pennsylvania adults suffers from serious mental illness and one in five between the ages of 18 and 25 uses illicit drugs. National Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, and that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can recover from mental illness and substance abuse.
I will be offering a resolution recognizing National Recovery Month in the Senate to encourage people to speak openly about substance-use and mental disorders and the realities of recovery, and to promote means by which individuals can recognize behavioral health issues and reach out for help.
Please join me in recognizing this important issue.
