MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 19, 2014 04:03 PM
From: Senator Rob Teplitz
To: All Senate members
Subject: Legislation – Requiring Lifeguards at State Parks with Public Beaches

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that would once again require certified lifeguards to be employed at all Pennsylvania state parks with public beaches.

With Memorial Day just around the corner and the start of swimming season near, it is so important to ensure that children and adults are safe swimming at Pennsylvania’s beaches. Not only do lifeguards provide water safety and lifesaving services to beach patrons, but can also provide first aid and other forms of assistance to those in need.

I helped write the Department of the Auditor General’s special report in 2008, which addressed the state’s elimination of lifeguards at lake beaches. We recommended that the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reconsider its decision and reinstitute the lifeguards, and I still believe that should be done. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation that will help protect those who want to enjoy and feel safe while visiting the beaches of Pennsylvania.
