MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 14, 2014 03:13 PM
From: Senator Andrew E. Dinniman
To: All Senate members
Subject: Resolution to rename Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center after recipient of Medal of Honor.

I will soon introduce a resolution memorializing the U.S. Congress to enact S. 229 and rename the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center after the late Michael J. Crescenz, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 1970 for his heroism during the Vietnam War.

United States Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey introduced S. 229 in February. The bill is presently before the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Crescenz received the Medal of Honor for his actions on Nov. 20, 1968, in Vietnam’s Hiep Duc Valley, when his Company A, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 196th Infantry Brigade, American Division was attacked by a well-entrenched force of the North Vietnamese Army. Corp. Crescenz left the safety of his location, grabbed a weapon and ran 100 meters up an incline toward the three attacking enemy bunkers, which he effectively silenced. When gunfire erupted from a fourth bunker, Corp. Crescenz charged after and attempted to silence it, and was mortally wounded.

Corporal Crescenz’ actions allowed the rest of Company A to complete their objectives with minimal danger, potentially saving the lives of his fellow comrades.
