MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 25, 2013 11:45 AM
From: Senator Jay Costa
To: All Senate members
Subject: Veterans Emergency Assistance Program

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will amend the Veterans’ Emergency Assistance Program. Senate Bill no. 1138 has been reserved.

Under this proposal, an eligible veteran receiving funds under the program would receive a minimum of $500 per month, adjusted annually in later years to reflect the rate of inflation. Additionally, the prohibition against a veteran receiving monetary assistance under the Public Welfare Code would be removed. Finally, the amount time that a veteran may receive assistance under the program would be doubled from 3 to 6 months.

The Veterans’ Emergency Assistance Program will provide temporary financial assistance to eligible veterans, their unmarried surviving spouses and surviving dependents when they face a financial emergency and need assistance to provide themselves with the necessities of life. The changes proposed in this legislation will further the purpose of the program and ensure that our veterans and their families have the resources they need when an unexpected financial emergency arises.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.

Introduced as SB1138
