Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 21, 2013 02:42 PM
From: Senator LeAnna M. Washington
To: All Senate members
Subject: Bullying Awareness Month

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2013 as “Bullying Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Bullying is defined as intentional, repeated behavior by one or more persons, which either physically or emotionally harms others. Bullying takes many forms and affects all classes, ages, religions, and communities without discrimination.

A 2011 Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Youth Survey found that 15% of 10th graders reported being sexually harassed online. A 2010 study by the Center for Schools and Communities found that across Pennsylvania bullying victimization of students in grades 3 – 12 affects an estimated 180,000 students weekly. Additionally, a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study of children grades 9 through 12 showed that 21.2% of females and 18.7% of males reported being bullied on school property in the past twelve (12) months.

Bullying not only affects our children, but is prevalent in the workforce. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute, up to a third of workers may be victims of workplace bullying.

No one should never have to endure this kind of treatment and I hope that you will join me in brining awareness to bullying in Pennsylvania by cosponsoring this resolution. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office.
