MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 13, 2013 02:53 PM
From: Senator Michael L. Waugh
To: All Senate members
Subject: Expanding Property Tax Exemption for Veterans

I am reintroducing legislation that proposes a constitutional amendment to extend the property tax abatement to all disabled veterans, regardless of whether they served during a time of officially declared war. This legislation, which was originally suggested by a constituent, was Senate Bill 913 during the 2011-12 session of the General Assembly.

Under Article VIII of the state Constitution, veterans must have served “in any war or armed conflict in which the United States was engaged.” This language would be removed and replaced with language stating that the veteran must have served in the armed forces of the United States.

Senators who co-sponsored Senate Bill 913 were Brewster, Costa, Eichelberger, Erickson, Fontana, Greenleaf, Kasunic, Mensch, Rafferty, Solobay, Tartaglione, White and Wozniak.

If you have any questions regarding this legislation, please contact Greg Beckenbaugh in my office at 787-3817 or gbeckenbaugh@pasen.gov.
