MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 28, 2013 01:59 PM
From: Senator Richard L. Alloway, II
To: All Senate members
Subject: Tourette Syndrome Resolution

I invite you to co-sponsor a resolution recognizing May 15 through June 15, 2013, as "Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

An estimated 3 in every 1000 children ages 6 – 17 in the United States and this Commonwealth are diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a neurobiological, genetic condition which has no cure.

Tourette Syndrome is a life-long developmental disability that begins before a child reaches 18 years of age and affects children and adults of all races and ethnicities. Individuals with Tourette Syndrome are affected by tics and involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly. Individuals with Tourette Syndrome face periodic changes in the nature and severity of their tics, as these
symptoms wax and wane and change without forewarning.

With this resolution, we will recognize the needs of these individuals with neurological impairment and urge all citizens to support education and awareness of Tourette Syndrome and to assist those individuals and families who deal with this neurobiological disorder every day of their lives.
