Subject: | Senior Judges retirement |
In the near future, I plan on re-introducing legislation increasing the retirement age for judges in the Commonwealth, and I invite you to join me as a co-sponsor. Once a judge retires in Pennsylvania, the Supreme Court can assign a former or retired justice to serve in their capacity until the vacancy is filled. This is a cause for concern, due to the fact that there is no public involvement in the appointment of a retired judge’s extended period of service. Also, my bill would save the Commonwealth taxpayer dollars associated with the costs of paying per diems for senior or retired judges’ extended judicial assignments. Therefore, it is my intent to introduce legislation requiring judges to continue serving out their term until the age of 75 This is a reintroduction of Senate Bill 1452 of the previous legislative session. Co-sponsors included Senators HUGHES, FERLO, MENSCH AND ALLOWAY |
