MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 19, 2022 09:50 AM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Prohibiting Firearms in the Capitol

Pennsylvania Code currently prohibits individuals from possessing firearms in the State Capitol Complex except for State or Federal officers in connection with the performance of official duty and limited others. Such policies are in place to protect the public, officials, and employees as they utilize the Capitol building and surrounding grounds. As a National Historic Landmark, all Pennsylvanians and visitors deserve to safely use and enjoy the Capitol Complex without the threat of gun violence.

To safeguard our shared work environment, I am introducing legislation that would provide specific mention of state regulations in statute. My legislation would prohibit individuals, with the exception of law enforcement and security personnel, from carrying firearms, rifles, or shotguns at any time in Pennsylvania’s Capitol buildings. Under the bill, lockers or similar facilities must be made available, at no charge, within each building of the Capitol for the temporary checking of firearms.

It is vital, especially during these tumultuous times, that we show respect for everyone’s right to feel safe by prohibiting firearms in the Pennsylvania State Capitol building and surrounding grounds. Please join me in valuing this right to safety by signing on to this proposal.

Introduced as HB2761
