Subject: Prohibiting Genetic Test Results from Impacting Insurance Coverage

In the past decade, there has been an explosion in at-home DNA testing as people seek to learn about their heritage and ancestry.  The information from these tests is deeply personal and should remain that way to the extent the person taking the test wishes for it to be private.  It is important that the results of a person’s DNA testing not negatively impact their everyday life.

That is why I am introducing a bill to prohibit life insurers from limiting, altering, or denying coverage to customers based on their genetic information.  The bill will further forbid insurers from requiring or soliciting an individual’s genetic testing for genetic purposes.  This legislation is a companion to Senate Bill 125.

A person’s genetic information is no one’s business but their own. To allow insurers to limit or deny coverage to a customer because that person wanted to know their family’s country of origin would be unjust.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation so Pennsylvanians do not face discrimination over the basic essence of who they are.
