Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 22, 2021 09:51 AM
From: Representative Michael H. Schlossberg
To: All House members
Subject: The Local Referendum Transparency Act

Whether it is at the polls or from the comfort of your own home, your ballot should never be a mystery. Voters should always know who and what they are voting for without confusion or doubt.

Interpretive ballot statements, also known as plain English statements, are available at the polls for individuals voting in person, but not in vote-by-mail ballots. Voters should not be penalized with confusion because they chose a different method of voting. To remedy this issue, I will be introducing legislation that will require municipalities to include interpretive ballot statements for local referendum questions with every vote-by-mail ballot.

This simple yet impactful measure will ensure true transparency and accountability for voters, no matter how they choose to cast their ballot. Please join me in support of voter rights and election integrity.

Introduced as HB2194
