MEMORANDUM

Subject: State Memorial to Veterans Who Died by Suicide

Suicide affects thousands of families across Pennsylvania, and service members and veterans have a suicide rate 2.5 times higher than the general population. More than 30,000 post-9/11 veterans have died by suicide, and 270 Pennsylvanian veterans tragically lost their lives to suicide in 2019 alone.
In recent years, serious efforts to prevent suicide and raise awareness have saved lives. Since its inception in 2011, the Veterans Crisis Line, which can be accessed by calling 800-273-8255 or texting 838255, has taken more than 5.6 million calls. With this bill, it is our intention to continue to improve awareness, combat stigma, and remember those we have lost.
We are proposing the creation of a state memorial to veterans who died by suicide to recognize the lifelong sacrifices of those who served our country and to honor the veterans who lost their lives to suicide. I hope you will join us in supporting this important legislation.

Introduced as HB2266
