Subject: Removing Cannabis as a Highly Addictive and Dangerous Substance

A Schedule I substance as defined by the United States government has a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. Currently, cannabis is regulated for medical use in 36 states and 4 territories and regulated for adult use in 18 states. Yet the federal government continues to place cannabis in the same Schedule I classification as heroin, a substance that kills tens of thousands of Americans each year. Meanwhile, Schedule II drugs, like fentanyl, crystal meth, cocaine, and oxycodone, are considered less dangerous than cannabis according to federal law. Something is clearly amiss here that needs correcting.

The vast majority of Americans live under laws where cannabis is available for medical use and there is overwhelming support for its legalization for recreational purposes. It is time that federal government enacts policy that reflects the reality of its people. De-scheduling cannabis will facilitate medical research, ensure patient access, and remove federal prohibitions. It would improve an uncountable number of lives and eliminate billions in cost by reducing government spending for prohibition enforcement in the criminal justice system. With the knowledge we have in the 21st century, we are now fully aware that cannabis cannot belong in the Schedule I category.

Soon, we plan to introduce a resolution urging the federal government take action to remove cannabis as a Schedule I substance. We ask that you join us in this effort to better the lives of Americans and reinforce our democratic values.
