Subject: Hazardous Student Walking Routes

More school children may have to walk further on routes that are hazardous to their safety as a result of the school bus driver shortage that has only worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. Such walking routes may be designated as hazardous, limiting the distance students may be asked to walk on the route but, at this time, only school districts can request an official evaluation of a walking route. Unfortunately, given the various issues schools must deal with, it could be difficult for a school district to maintain awareness of the hazards of each student walking route.

That is why I am introducing legislation that would make it easier for students, parents, and guardians to bring hazardous walking routes to the attention of school districts. The legislation would require the creation of a paper and online form for students, parents, and guardians to use to request that a school district seek an official evaluation of a potentially hazardous walking route. Students, parents, and guardians would be more aware if a walking route is hazardous than school districts, so it is important that they are given the opportunity to notify their schools of these hazards.

Students deserve to walk to school or the bus stop safely, and their parents or guardians deserve to know that their children are safe on their way to school. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to keep our children safe when they go to school.
