Subject: | Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month in Pennsylvania |
Every year, Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring the rich cultural traditions and achievements of the ancestors of American citizens who came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and South- and Central America. Since the founding of this nation, Latinos have helped to shape the social, cultural, and economic fabric that weaves together the world we know today. An estimated 896,000 Hispanic Americans live in Pennsylvania, as entrepreneurs, students, community leaders, essential workers and so much more. Observation of Hispanic Heritage Week started in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later extended to a 30-day celebration by President Ronald Reagan, starting on September 15 and ending on October 15 in association with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile. Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance for all Americans to celebrate the accomplishments, rich histories, and diversity of our Latino and Hispanic communities – in Pennsylvania and across the country. We are a diverse nation, made immeasurably stronger by the vast and historic contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities to our society. Please join me in recognizing this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month in celebration of the incredible impact the Hispanic-American community has had on the United States. |
