Subject: Exempt Election Day Poll Worker Income Under the Taxpayer Relief Act

The individuals that facilitate elections – our precinct level Election Day poll workers – have proven themselves to be true champions of democracy as many continued to serve even during a global pandemic.  Older members of our communities often volunteer to serve as poll workers.  Regrettably, these same community members who may otherwise qualify for property tax or rental rebate assistance can lose benefits simply because they chose to facilitate free and fair elections.  This must be changed.

Older community members serving as poll workers should not have to worry that their civic duty may exclude them from property tax or rent rebate assistance.  For this reason, I plan to introduce legislation to amend the definition of “income” under the Taxpayer Relief Act to specifically exempt compensation received as a poll worker.  This is a simple fix with long lasting benefits for older Pennsylvanians.

Our neighbors serve their community every election cycle.  It is time we serve them, too.  Please join me in helping to grant relief to those who always greet us with a smile at the ballot box.  Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
