Subject: | Before You Go, Clear Your Snow |
From November to March, there is a chance of snowy and icy conditions throughout Pennsylvania. Every year, car crashes occur across the state due to winter weather; however, many could be avoided if drivers cleaned the snow and ice accumulation off of their vehicles. Failing to do this simple act prior to driving, creates an unsafe atmosphere on the roads which ultimately results in accidents that could have been prevented. Taking 20 minutes to clean off your car before driving could save somebody’s life. Currently in Pennsylvania, drivers are only fined if the accumulation falling from their vehicle injures or kills somebody. This is unacceptable and we must create a better deterrent in our state. Too many lives are at risk on our roadways to wait until a tragic accident occurs before fining negligent drivers. For the safety of every person that drives through the Commonwealth, I am proposing legislation to fix this gap in our law. Regardless of whether or not anything flies off the car, my legislation will fine a driver who fails to clear their vehicle between $25 and $75. There will also be an increase in the current penalty given to any driver who causes death or serious bodily harm to another person from $1,000 to $1,500. This preventive measure will reduce the risk of snow and ice flying off of a car and possibly resulting in injury and death to our drivers, pedestrians, and roadway maintenance workers throughout the state. The overall safety of every single Pennsylvanian should be of the utmost importance and I urge you to please join me in establishing safe roadways for all. |
