MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 3, 2021 04:22 PM
From: Representative Jennifer O'Mara
To: All House members
Subject: Allowing for Increased Contributions to the Veterans Trust Fund

In Pennsylvania, we respect and appreciate our veterans. The sacrifices these men and women make protect the freedoms we all cherish. To show our appreciation, we voluntarily contribute thousands of dollars annually to the Veterans’ Trust Fund (VTF) when we renew our licenses.

The VTF issues grants to organizations that assist veterans. Money from this fund directly helps veterans in need. Unlike other funds, one hundred percent of all donations go into the VTF. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) charges no administrative costs, salaries, or contract fees to the fund. Unfortunately, the law that established the VTF capped voluntary donations at a level below what many wish to contribute.

Because of this, I am introducing legislation to increase the amount an individual can voluntarily contribute to the VTF. My bill will increase the annual contribution amount from $3 to $5 and the biannual contribution amount from $6 to $10.  This is a reintroduction of former House Bill 1609 of 2019, which passed the House unanimously last session

I ask that you join me once again in supporting this legislation and help our veterans in need.

Introduced as HB556
