| “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” This unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service (USPS) is a tribute to the hard work of postal service employees and, in the public mind, demonstrates the reliability of the postal service by saying that no obstacle will prevent the postal service from delivering mail. Pennsylvanians have relied and continue to rely on the postal service for a myriad of reasons, including keeping in touch with others, staying up-to-date with the news, and transacting business. Now many Pennsylvanians are now relying on the USPS to perform a citizen’s most important duty in a democracy: voting. Sadly, allegations that the mail is being delayed and interfered with for partisan political purposes is undermining public trust in the postal service. If true, these actions undermine democracy and the American experiment itself, because election integrity is nonexistent if votes and voices can be silenced for speaking up against those in power. The importance of a politically unbiased postal service to a well-functioning democracy is one of those things that transcends politics. Therefore, to show support for this ideal, I will be introducing a resolution that urges Congress to provide the funding necessary to adequately run the Postal Service, commemorates the history of the USPS, and highlights the institution’s role in ensuring free and fair elections during these challenging times. I hope you will show support for the USPS by joining me in supporting this resolution. |
