Subject: Grants to Help LGBTQ Senior Citizens
 
Our LGBTQ senior citizens have unmet needs that existing services do not address. They:
 
  • Experience higher rates of mental distress and depression than other senior citizens;
  • Are less likely to be partnered or married, which can result in less social and financial support; and
  • Face the possibility of discrimination and prejudice when accessing services.
I will be introducing legislation to address this. My bill will award grants to non-profit organizations and local governments for health care, cultural competency, computer training, job placement, social activities, and other programs that specifically help the LGBTQ senior community. The $2.5 million needed for this grant program will come from the Lottery Fund.
 
Every single member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has professed concern about seniors. We all strive to enact laws that allow our senior citizens to age with dignity in a healthy environment. My legislation will address a serious shortfall in our senior services, and I ask for your support.
