MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 11, 2021 02:31 PM

To: All House members
Subject: Removal of Weight Class Sticker

In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that would eliminate the Commonwealth’s requirement for issuing and displaying a registration class sticker on certain vehicles. The registration class sticker is intended to be displayed upon trucks, truck-tractors or combinations registered in the Commonwealth within the registered gross weight classes of 2 through 25. The registration class sticker was implemented to serve law enforcement as a visual indicator for when they conduct weight inspections of commercial vehicles.
However, for various reasons, law enforcement’s reliance upon such stickers for verifying the weight of commercial vehicles has significantly subsided over the years. For instance, Pennsylvania’s one and only permanent weigh station located along Interstate 80 has fallen into a state of disrepair and is longer utilized for size and weight enforcement. In addition, Pennsylvania is the only state in United States that requires a registration class sticker.
I ask that you please support my future legislation that would remove an unnecessary mandate placed upon our Commonwealth’s commercial vehicles.
