Subject: Concealed Carry Permit Information on Drivers Licenses and Photo Identification

During routine traffic stops, drivers with a concealed carry permit are often in fear that their legally registered firearm is thought to be illegal by law enforcement. It is extremely difficult to distinguish between a law-abiding citizen who has a concealed carry permit and a non-law-abiding citizen with an illegal gun, putting law enforcement officers, concealed carry permit owners, and bystanders at risk.

We cannot sit idly by as firearm deaths during routine traffic stops continue to put people’s lives at risk. My legislation aims to solve this issue by requiring drivers licenses and photo identification cards to specify whether an individual possesses a concealed carry permit. This would help an officer to immediately identify individuals who may legally possess a firearm in a vehicle and avoid potentially dangerous situations.

A policy has already been established for this type of identification - Organ Donor and Veteran identifications are already noted on driver’s licenses and photo identification cards by the state Department of Transportation.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to protect drivers and law enforcement officers across Pennsylvania.
