MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 23, 2020 10:14 AM
From: Representative Darisha K. Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Commonwealth Advisory Board on Geographic Names

Pennsylvania is full of beautiful and historical geographic locations that are widely visited by many Americans every single year. Our state has a rich history of people and heritage and it is our responsibility to ensure the names of places throughout the state are not offensive to any group or individual person.

Most often, changes to geographic names occurs at the federal level. The United States Board on Geographic Names will change geographic names by accepting proposals from local and county governments, the State Names Authority, and land management agencies. In order to help assist these governments and agencies in their attempts to change potentially derogatory or outdated geographic names, I am introducing legislation that would create the Commonwealth Advisory Board on Geographic Names. The board would be an appointed, bi-partisan 12-member board with legislative and executive representation that would ease the complication of name changes.

It is crucial to bring Pennsylvania’s geographic names into the 21st century and ensure the process to update names across our state’s landscape is made easier through the Commonwealth Advisory Board of Geographic Names. Please show the people of Pennsylvania that we support them and will no longer allow for the names of our state’s geographic locations to be inappropriate or offensive.

Introduced as HB703
