MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 15, 2020 02:48 PM
From: Representative Joe Ciresi
To: All House members
Subject: Interscholastic Sports for Phys. Ed Requirement

Currently, high school students who are in two or more varsity sports are also required to take physical education classes. These students are involved in strenuous activities that meet the intent of keeping students fit and active, and developing a sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie which required Phys Ed courses are meant to foster.

To give school districts – and students – more flexibility, I will be introducing a bill to allow school boards to permit students to satisfy the physical education requirements by their participation in an interscholastic sport. This may be utilized twice per school year for seasonal interscholastic sports.

Students would be able to use the extra class time for either a study hall, to catch up on homework in the school library, or to take additional classwork which would benefit them in preparation for college. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
