Subject: Senior Citizen Tax Sale Deferral Program

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce legislation which would build on the existing Real Estate Tax Deferment Program Act in Title 53. This legislation would allow senior citizens who meet certain criteria to apply for real estate tax sale deferral for a homestead or farmstead property. Such a deferral would prevent the commencement of tax sale proceedings as well as the assessment of any additional penalties, fees, and fines on the unpaid balance of real estate taxes. Any taxes deferred through this proposal would constitute a lien against the property in favor of the political subdivision. The eligibility requirements for this program include:
•           Senior Citizens 65 years of age or older;
•           A household income of less than 500% of the poverty threshold for a two-person household according to the US Census Bureau; and,
•           An established residency within the Commonwealth for more than five years.
For our seniors that rely on a fixed or limited income, this initiative will provide a much-needed degree of financial certainty to help ensure they may remain in their homes. I respectfully ask you to join me and co-sponsor this legislation.
