Subject: Safeguarding Renters from Predatory Pet Deposits

Security deposits are a required necessity of landlords to ensure if a property has been damaged by a tenant there is some money reserved for repairs. A pet security deposit falls into this category, however, the amount of these fees has begun to skyrocket. Not only are renters being charged large sums of money to pay for these deposits, but many landlords are making them nonrefundable, creating a predatory environment.

In order to provide a solution and help keep these fees reasonable, I will be introducing legislation which would prohibit a landlord from requiring a nonrefundable fee either as a security or pet deposit. Renters should be provided protection from losing their money when no damage has occurred to the property because the deposit or fee was nonrefundable.

Please join me in sponsoring this legislation safeguarding Pennsylvania’s renters and their pets from predatory tactics using pet deposits.
