Subject: Co-sponsorship request: Recognizing November 2020 as “Assistive Technology Awareness Month”

Fair access to quality and affordable assistive technology is critical in meeting the needs of the approximately one in four Pennsylvanians who currently live with a disability. Providing the tools or supplies which can assist with everyday tasks such as walking, hearing, or speaking is essential in removing the often frustrating and stigmatizing barriers that can stand between individuals with disabilities and their quality of life.

Assistive technology such as hearing aids, wheelchairs, or orthotic devices can be a tremendous difference maker in an individual’s ability to reach educational, financial, and personal success, while also maintaining or achieving their independence. Such devices should be widely available without becoming a financial burden on an individual and their family. Thankfully, organizations such as the Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation (PATF) work on behalf of our fellow Pennsylvanians to advocate for the dignity and empowerment of individuals with disabilities and older adults by securing funding and financing options for those seeking assistance.

For these reasons, we will be introducing a resolution to designate November 2020 as “Assistive Technology Awareness Month.” Please join us in recognizing the importance of assistive technology devices and the continued financial support necessary to further connect individuals with the services they deserve. Together, we can amplify the voices of those seeking help to reach their goals and full potential.
