MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 19, 2020 02:56 PM
From: Representative G. Roni Green
To: All House members
Subject: Cancer of Unknown Primary Day (November 30, 2020)

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, and its point of origin is uncertain. Due to an unpredictable pattern of metastatic spread and resistance to chemotherapy, CUP has an average survival rate of five to eleven months. Globally, CUP remains the sixth to the eighth most common cancer, and the third to the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths.

As the average diagnosis age is approximately 60 years, there is a later start to treatment and reduced chances of survival. Although there have been noted advances in cancer treatment and research in recent years, further education and resources are needed in the fight against this debilitating disease. The more we work to encourage advocacy for CUP awareness, the better we can both protect ourselves and our families. As such, I plan to introduce a resolution designating November 30, 2020, as “Cancer of Unknown Primary Day” in Pennsylvania.

It is imperative that we as Pennsylvanians continue to make the effort to properly educate and generate awareness about a disease that has affected so many individuals in our nation. It is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort and your consideration is highly appreciated.

I also request your support as I am a survivor of this rare disease and know first-hand the challenges one faces going through treatment. There is hope, as I have reached my 12-year threshold as a survivor! Please join me in helping others!
