MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 22, 2020 11:47 AM
From: Representative Christopher B. Quinn
To: All House members
Subject: Sikh Recognition Resolution

Sikhism’s proud tradition posits upon practicing the universal principal of truthful living, service to humanity and devotion to highest power. The 10th Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, when he left the world, encouraged future generations to eschew idol worship and acknowledge the principle scripture of Sikhism, Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as Living Guru. The historic Supreme Court of India’s judgement supports that great notion of Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a Juristic person and further the importance in promoting peace and inter-religious harmony. The UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights has already noted Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's teaching in promotion of Human Rights.

Since arriving to our shores, Sikhs have made immense contributions to the Commonwealth and the American economy but they long have been subject to oppression and discrimination in other parts of the world. Sikhs share a unique set of beliefs, practices and ancestry since its foundation that is altogether different from other existing religions. Thereby, it’s important to embrace their distinct ethnicity.

The Commonwealth is committed to further diversity and afford all residents to better understand, recognize and appreciate the rich history of Sikhs.

I ask that you please join me in recognizing the cultural, religious and inter-faith importance of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as Living Guru of Sikhs in promoting peace and declaring Sikhs as a distinct ethnic and religious minority.
